Success in Portland

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Although most of my work is done locally in Chicago, I had the wonderful experience of working with a client in Portland, Oregon this week!

The client has had several major life changes and was looking for a whole new wardrobe. Being from the northwest, the client was (in my opinion) over utilizing the infamous t-shirt over the long-sleeve t-shirt thing. The too casual look was dated, but the worst part was the super-sized fit.

We went with a look that was still casual but more sophisticated for social activities. We also did a spin on the ultra comfy-casual that he’s so used to, but updated it with optimal colors and fits.

Lesson: Rock the right fit–clothes that are too big are likely making you look even bigger than you are.

On another note, Oregon is a fantastic state with much to offer in the outdoors. I was lucky enough to sit baking in the sun in a rocking chair at the top of a mountain overlooking Crater Lake:portland09-155b

I was so pleased to be a part of Wicker Women this week! Photographer Jennifer Bisbing was an intelligent and sincere photographer. She sees her work more as anthropological than aesthetic. My favorite part of the photo shoot was her explanation of how people should take pictures of themselves more often because it is so telling of your own mood and how you carry yourself in general and on a daily basis. My second favorite part was her telling me to pretend I was the Queen of England and to think that I was better than everyone else and would therefore kill everyone with my smile. Scary and charming.

Proceeds from the program are being donated to a Wicker Park women’s shelter.

All jewelry is by one of my all time favorite local stores: Baby Dolls Boutiue!

About Laura

Some clients and friends have been asking me to post some notes and thoughts about myself and how LKc Style was born.

I grew up all over the Midwest finally landing in Southeast Wisconsin for most of high school and college. I have a BBA from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. My background is actually in real estate and urban land economics (you’re thinking snore-fest, I know). I enjoyed some very interesting projects in the industry and some phenomenal internation travels, but the idea of working for myself has always been in my blood.

The fashion industry always intrigued me…not in a "who’s wearing who" sort of way, but more psychologically: why does a person choose to wear certain things and how does it fit the context of their own life. Of course, there is a fun side of it all too. The idea for LKc Style was originally rooted in a rash of attending happy hours with a roommate. We would sit and observe different types of people at various lounges and dives around the city of Chicago. What started out as a joke about dressing people up for happy hours turned into a serious conversation about providing real consultation services. Add this to the fact that most personal shoppers are for women and come at a great expense to the client, LKc Style differentiated itself by working exclusively for male clientel and at reasonable rates.

So far my favorite thing about working for LKc Style is hearing back from clients who are getting great feedback from friends or coworkers on a new style or even a specific item that was purchased. It’s one thing for a client to hear me tell them they look good…it must be more rewarding to have people who they regularly interact with say the same thing.

When I am not putting together fashion portfolios, you might find me running (I just finished my first half marathon), jet-setting (I’d love for my next big trip to be Brazil), or maybe playing Rock Band (don’t judge, it’s awesome).

I am thrilled to be launching LKc Style this month! The idea for a personal shopping company exclusively for men had been ruminating only for a few months before getting a crew together to set up the website and a gather a great network of people including my first several clients.

I want to use this blog as a forum for several things: general thoughts on the fashion industry, tips and hints, before/after shots of oh-so-willing clients, and of course, my generic ramblings about anything on my mind worth mentioning. I encourage a ridiculous amount of comments and opinions—it’s the best way for all of us to gain a little perspective.

This is an exciting adventure…I am so glad you’re here along the way. My first stop: a photo shoot—I will soon be featured on http://wickerwomen.blogspot.com/ as a woman who does business in the ever trendy Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago!
