Button Down Shirts: Modern vs. Classic Fit

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

An LKc client was recently making some online purchases and noticed many of the button down shirts indicated different “fits.” This might be confusing. Here’s a very quick run down:

CLASSIC FIT–also seen as Regular Fit, this shirt has a larger fit around the arms and waist; can be tailored to many sizes (i.e. you have larger biceps or a bit of a gut and might need some extra space). Purchase this kind of shirt to the biggest part of your body and then tailor in (have cloth removed) from your smaller areas. Often times you can find classic fit shirts that are very close to your size and might not need tailoring at all!

MODERN FIT–a pre-tailored fit around the arms and waist. You might also see this described as a European fit or simply as Fitted. These shirts come smaller under the arms and at the waist already. You’ll only need to get these tailored if you’re very picky or have an irregular size. Some might say this is trendy now, but LKc believes that a man should always wear shirts that fit HIM (regardless of trends)…that might mean classic, that might mean modern–try stuff on or give LKc Style a holler for more help!!

Rock star turned advertising genius, Sam has really made this ensemble his own style. He courageously put together different patterns and colors. He fits in at this townie bar, but could pop into a downtown lounge in the same night. Most notably, check out how well everything fits–not too big and sloppy, not too tight to see his junk (we love you Sam, but we don’t want to see your junk).

My fellow blogger The Possessionista often gets requests for her affordable-finds expertise for men’s wear. She continues to focus mostly on women’s fashion and graciously has forwarded a few manly requests my way. A reader most recently inquired about Dan from Gossip Girl season three. Here’s a few looks for less:

Undershirts: DON’T!

Monday, July 20th, 2009

While spending some time on the streets looking for the smartly dressed gentlemen of the city of Minneapolis last week, I noticed quickly that there are few in the city to be found–although to be fair, it was cold and rainy–but when did that stop the MN men from anything?!

Something I DID see a lot (read: altogether too much) of is a regular LKc Style NO-NO: the white undershirt visible under the button down (as shown by this wine-swilling dork below).

The undershirt is just that: an UNDER shirt. Don’t misunderstand me–you should be wearing undershirts, especially if you’re of the sweaty-man variety…BUT we don’t want to see it on your neckline or, worse, through the button down shirt. Would you walk around with your underwear hanging out?!?! OK, some of you do…but that’s for another post.

If you have problems with a showing undershirt, consider buttoning another button up or find shirts where the 2nd to top button is just below the clavicle (that goofy bone at the base of your neck), OR purchase undershirts with a V-neck.
