Winterrrrrrr Clearrrrrrrrrrrance!

Friday, January 21st, 2011

“I got an email today from Express about their end of the season sale and when I think fashionable and frugal, I think you…as a curious follower, if you could offer insight into fashion standards or looks that will be safe bets on still being fashionable next winter (let along the rest of this one), it would be perfect for these sort of end of the season sales. Just a thought. Hope all is well (and warmer than here… -9° right now… can’t. get. warm.)” –E.J.

First as always, thanks for reading and thinking we’re frugal; flattery will get you everywhere (including into this blog post). Second, -9?? You need some serious warmth and there are luckily some good winter clearance sales going on right now. We recommend layering–start with a long sleeved shirt or button down, get a sweater or hoodie, grab a blazer over that and top it off with your quintessential winter jacket. If you’re still cold then, you should probably get a job at Columbia or Patagonia and get some free gear… Here are a few affordable collectibles for your long-term winter closet:

All Saints Spark Funnel on sale from $160 to $48!

Levi’s Capital E Navy Quilted Nylon Down Zip Vest on sale from $72 to $48.99

Timberland Earthkeepers Moc Toe Boot on sale from $155 to $99.99

JOHN VARVATOS Hat on sale from $99 to $39

Herring Slim Fit Shirt on sale from $49.50 to $34.65

Remember, these are all sale items and could likely sell out quickly…so pick them up before their gone. If you’re looking for something in particular, e-mail us!

Un-Holey Jeans

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

A  reader wrote me a query recently: Something I have been struggling with lately is buying a good pair of jeans.  I’m a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy, but some of my stand by jeans are now wearing out and when I look at American Eagle type places they all have those pre-fab holey jeans, and I refuse to into an Abercrombie & Fitch.  Thoughts? Thanks for the question CC.

The world of jeans is so vast it’s scary. I don’t blame you or anyone else on the planet unable to find their go-to jeans brand on a regular basis. I have a couple things to say before I make a few recommendations:

1. Every man has a different shape and size. A lot of jeans won’t fit you and that’s normal. Try a couple pairs on in different stores and you’ll see differences in brands.

2. Go for a dark wash (coloring). It’s classic, slimming and can be casual or dressed up a bit.  A light wash might make you look like a cast member of Saved By The Bell…so, don’t do it, Preppy.

3. There are TONS of super expensive jeans…I say you can find awesome quality jeans at a reasonable price. Consider paying $40-80 for a good pair of jeans that you’ll have for many years (instead of $20 jeans that you’ll have for one year).

4. Find a sale on the jeans you like–$60 can become $40 with coupons or seasonal discounts.

A few I like:

levis_loosestraight569jeansshakergreyLevi’s Loose Straight 569® Jeans in Blue Steel $40

(previously mentioned in the blog post on Details Magazine Alternatives)

Gap’s Selvage Authentic Fit Dark Rinse $88 (Other Authentic Fits go for only $50 too)

(also: I wouldn’t usually recommend cuffs like this photo)
